Obituary

Darryl James "Dally" Berger, died peacefully at his home on December 20, 2017 in Cuero, TX at the age of 75.

Dally is survived by his wife of almost 52 years, Donna, his two daughters, Deborah Berger Bourland and her husband Tim Bourland of Victoria TX, Deanna Berger Greiner and her husband Colonel (Dr.) Steven Greiner of Vienna, VA and his son Darryl James Berger II and his wife Elizabeth "Buffi" Houston Berger of West Columbia, TX; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; his sister, Opal Berger of Rabun Gap, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents Ernst and Erna Raak Berger, of Cuero and his brother, Ernst Christian "E.C." Berger of Houston, TX.

Dally was born on October 18, 1942 in DeWitt County, TX to Ernst Berger and Erna Raak Berger. He graduated from Cuero High School in 1962 and began working as a surveyor, then worked construction for DuPont and later began working for Central Power and Light as a lineman. He married Donna Yvonne Strain in 1966 and over nine years, the couple welcomed three children into their home. His children remember their Papa as a kind father who would sacrifice anything he had for them. Dally was a man of many skills and worked many different jobs ranging from ranching, welding, oilfield services, commercial truck driving, veterinary assistant and cattle sales throughout his life. He was a proud veteran having served in the Texas Army National Guard and reaching the rank of SGT. He was a lifelong and zealous supporter of Cuero Gobblers athletics and a member of the Gobbler Booster Club for over 30 years. He was active in Cuero Young Farmers and a member of the Cuero Masonic Lodge No. 409 for many years, even serving as a past Master. He was a generous individual who loved hunting and fishing and who was passionate about his family. He was an active and dedicated member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Arneckeville and served on the church council.

Visitation will be held Friday, December 22, 2017 from 5-7 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Saturday, December 23, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Arneckeville with Pastor Barbara Beale officiating. There will be a time of fellowship following the service. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dally's life.

Pallbearers will include Emit Drehr, Jacob Greiner, Seth Greiner, Gentry Greiner, Dustin Berger, and Travis Hill. Honorary pallbearers include Keith Richardson, Byron Wolf, and Dr. David Zawieja.

The family is extremely grateful for the dedication and exceptional care provided by Dr. Carl Tong, his nurse, Donna Wilkinson and the staff of Scott & White Medical Center – Temple.
