CUERO - Donald R. Smith, 80, of Cuero, passed away Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008. He was born Aug. 13, 1928, in Wichita, Kan. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict and was a member of Cuero American Legion Post No. 3. He was also a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, worked on many church projects, and was a member of the Cuero Volunteer Fire Department. He was a rigger with Union Carbide for 32 years.
He is survived by his wife, Eva Janet "Enette" Weber Smith, whom he married on Jan. 12, 1949 in Cuero; son, David R. Smith and wife Bea of Cuero; grandchildren, Jeff Smith of Cuero, Julie Gregg of Hawaii, and David Marshal Smith of Cuero; and great-grandchildren, Hudson Smith and Barrett Smith, both of Cuero, and Teagan Gregg and Taylor Gregg, both of Hawaii.
He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Smith; mother, Maud Smith Dunn; stepfather, Foy V. Dunn; and brother, Loren E. Smith.
Visitation will be 6-7 p.m. today, Nov. 17, with a rosary recited at 7 p.m., at Freund Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Cuero with Father Kirby Hlavaty officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero.
Pallbearers: Bill Braden, Glenn Braden, Mike Frera, Gus Leck, Ed Southern, and Joe Tomanec.
Honorary pallbearers: William Finney and Dutton Lane.
