Elroy Peters, 93, of Meyersville , passed away Sunday, June 10, 2018 at the Hospice of South Texas Dornburg Center of Compassion in Victoria. He was born January 13, 1925 in Westhoff to Fritz and Leona Schroeder Peters. His mother died at a very young age, and he was raised by his stepmother, Leona Wendel Peters. Elroy was an devout steward of the Lutheran churches in Cuero , Rockport, and Meyersville . He greeted everyone with a smile and served his chosen organizations as a true servant. He worked with the American Legion, American Cancer Society, Travelers Protective Association, Hermann Sons Life and various service organizations throughout his life. Mr. Peters received an Honorable Discharge in 1946 from the United States Army as Sergeant AT Co, 9th Infantry, 2nd Division after serving two years. He was awarded a Purple Heart, Good Conduct and Service Medals for service in Germany during World War II. He was a drum major in the Drum and Bugle Corps. Later in life Elroy began to share some of the remarkable stories about things that happened during the war. His memory was amazing. Returning to Cuero after the service, Elroy invested in a service station. After selling that, he moved on to Alamo Lumber Company, which led to his employment and retirement as district warehouse manager of IMCO Services, a division of Halliburton, in Rockport and Corpus.
Elroy met Helen Kahlich in November of 1941. He left for the army in 1944. They were later married in Lindenau St. John Lutheran Church on July 22, 1945. They had three daughters and a son, Lynda Hiller (Leroy) of Georgetown, Nancy Kramer (Jerry) of Victoria, Sandie Woods (Jerald) of Missouri City, and Kenneth Peters of Rockport. Helen Kahlich Peters passed away in April 1961. Elroy married Ruth Gohmert Fischer Peters, July 2, 1966 and the family moved from Cuero to Rockport. Elroy has two stepchildren, Jerry Lee Fischer of Meyersville and Linda Claire Baros . Mr. and Mrs. Peters have been married almost 52 years and retired in Meyersville in 1986. He found a lot of joy working in his woodshop making clocks, plaques, and cutouts, playing cards and working on his computer, and traveling and enjoying American Legion conventions. He kept his mind alert by working the cryptoquips and handling membership dues for several organizations. Mr. Peters has two grandchildren, Scott Hiller (LeAnn) of McKinney and Stacy Kuhn (Chris) of The Colony. He has a step granddaughter, Lorrie Jones of Rosenburg . He has two step grandsons, Jimmy Baros (Tabitha) of Cuero and Charlie Baros (Dena) of Meyersville . He has been blessed with 10 great-grandchildren.
Elroy is also survived by stepbrother, Nolan Wendel (Audrey) and sister-in-law, Juanita Peters, all of Cuero; and many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. Elroy was predeceased by his parents; wife; sister, Deloris Gaus (Elwood) of Yoakum , brother, Wilfred of Cuero ; stepsister, Evelyn Weischwill (Reuben) of Yorktown; and nephew, Barrett Gaus (Sandra) of Cuero .
Visitation will be Tuesday, June 12, 2018 from 5-7 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. Services will be held Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at 10 a.m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Meyersville , with Pastor John Boor officiating. Burial with military honors will be follow at Lindenau Community Cemetery by St John Lutheran Church.
Pallbearers will be Scott Hiller , Chris Kuhn, Jimmy Baros , Charlie Baros , Heath Littleton, Eric Gaus , and Luke Schuckenbrock . Honorary pallbearers will be Leroy Hiller , Jerry Kramer, Jerald Woods, Howard Burks, and Alan Kahlich .
