Obituary

Emalee Wells Hartman, 91, died in San Antonio, Sunday, November 7, 2010. She was born in Bay City, Texas on October 28, 1919. She was the loving wife of Judge Wayne L. Hartman, the daughter of Letitia Lewis and Edgar B Wells, and the sister of Letitia Geiger. Mrs. Hartman attended boarding school at Our Lady of the Lake and later at Incarnate Word High School. She subsequently received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from The University of Texas at Austin.

She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Cuero and saw her children baptized and confirmed there. Mrs. Hartman proudly served as president of the Junior League of Victoria. She was also a member of the Colonial Dames of America, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Court of Six Flags at Victoria.

No summary of Mrs. Hartman's life would be complete without mention of her two lifelong friends, Beulah Margaret McDougal and Rosemary Breeden Kokernot. Mrs. Kokernot was, among other things, a partner in a thriving travel business that led the two of them and Judge Hartman on many far flung travels around the world.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of sixty-nine years, and her sister. Mrs. Hartman is survived by daughters, Letty Lew Lloyd and her husband, Dr. David G. Lloyd of San Antonio, and Susan Wells Pope and her husband Michael L. Pope of Lake Jackson. Her four doting grandsons and their wives are David George Lloyd Jr. and Paola, Christian Hartman Lloyd, Wayne Lloyd Pope and Jamie, Lewis Wells Pope and Amy. Great-grandchildren include Christopher, Sofia, Ryan, Jack, Lynley, Maslan, and Lane. She was wonderfully attended by caregivers Margie Ford, Mae McIntyre, Rosie Taylor, and Loetta White.

Pallbearers will include David George Lloyd Jr., Christian Hartman Lloyd, Wayne Lloyd Pope, Lewis Wells Pope, Fain McDougal Jr., Kent McGaughy, Shannon Ratliff III, Richard McAlister, and J.T. Wofford. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Sheppard, Shanon Ratliff II, Richard Geiger, William Cusak, Bill Blackwell, Bucky Sager, Dr. James Pridgen, and Frank Buhler.

Emalee Hartman will long be remembered for her close family relationships and many, many loyal friendships. She remained intellectually curious and open to change until the end of her life. Service will be held at 2:00pm, Friday, November 12, 2010 at Grace Episcopal Church in Cuero with a burial to follow at Hillside Cemetery.
