Obituary

Ernest L. Meier, 92, died Tuesday, February 22, 2011. He was born in Winters, Texas, the son of Rev. Eugene Meier and Julia Trimpler Meier, and grew up in and around Arneckeville where his father was the Lutheran pastor. After military service in World War II, he was employed by Continental Oil Company in offices in Yorktown, El Campo, and Corpus Christi. He married Evelyn Claire Heyer of Cuero in 1943. For most of their married life, Ernest and Evelyn lived in Cuero. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, where he and Evelyn were faithful participants in the choir for many years and Ernest served the church in numerous capacities. He and Evelyn were active in the DeWitt County Wildflower Association and, until his health prevented it, gathered most of the wildflower specimens exhibited in the museum during the annual wildflower tour. He was a member of the Arneckeville Community Association and an enthusiastic domino player. Ernest is remembered especially for his mischievous sense of humor, good natured pranks, generosity with his time, and concern for others.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years; children, Barbara K. Baur and husband, Tomas, of Annapolis, Maryland and Michael Meier of Victoria; grandchildren, Jonathan 'Jay' Baur and Jennifer Baur Sanchez and husband, Manuel Sanchez, of Maryland; sisters-in-law, Georgia Lee Heyer of Cuero and Elvira Meier of Uvalde; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Wilma Koehler; and brothers, Eugene Meier and Edwin Meier.
