MEYERSVILLE -- Florine Emma Dohmann, 87, of Meyersville was called home on August 31, 2009. She was born January 19, 1922, in Meyersville, to the late Alonzo Christian (Pete) and Frieda Haun Seiler.
Florine Seiler and Edgar Dohmann were married on October 26, 1941 in Meyersville. They lived in Weesatche for 4 years before moving to Yorktown where they were sharecroppers and tenant farmers on the Westphal Ranch until they opened Dohmann's Place in Meyersville in 1962. She loved gardening and always had a large garden and a beautiful lawn. Florine and Edgar enjoyed traveling and playing dominos & bridge.
Florine was proud to call herself a housewife, but that doesn't begin to describe her role in the family. From their marriage in 1941 until they moved to Meyersville in 1962, she worked side-by-side with her dear husband, Edgar, in all aspects of their farming and ranching life including cutting corn tops, pulling corn & picking cotton by hand, doctoring & branding cattle, building fences, and whatever else needed to be done.
She was an extraordinary seamstress. She sewed most of the family's clothes including Edgar's work clothes, her own dresses, and shirts & jackets for her sons. She also loved quilting and made a number of beautiful heirloom quilts for her family and helped make many quilts with her church groups.
She was also the primary family caregiver and always put everyone else's needs above her own. She took care of her mother in her last years and took extraordinarily good care of Edgar in his last years. Through almost superhuman efforts, she was able to keep Edgar at home until the last 2 months of his life. Daily walks with Virgie Gohmert and other friends helped keep her physically fit in her later years.
She was a Lutheran all her life and was always very active in church activities. She especially enjoyed making nursing home visits with her close friend, Helen Sievers. Her strong faith and friends sustained her during her illness.
Although she had only a 10th grade education, Florine was extremely intelligent, understood the value of an education, and loved to read. She instilled this respect for education in her children and worked with them every evening to be sure that they got all their homework done on time.
Florine is survived by her sons, Edgar Lee and wife Janis of Alvin, and Leon of Weesatche; grandchildren, Karen Wiebelhaus (Cody) of Pearland and Ryan Dohmann of Alvin; and great-granddaughter, Kayden Wiebelhaus. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years on June 16, 2008; parents; brothers, Newton and Lee Roy Seiler; and daughter-in-law, Mary Jo Dohmann.
The family gratefully acknowledges the loving care of the Cuero Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Accolade Hospice, Brenda Lord, RN, and Dr. Jennifer Gonzales.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on September 2 at Freund Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m on Thursday, September 3 at St. John Lutheran Church, Meyersville, with the Rev. Eric Petty presiding. Burial will follow at the St. John cemetery.
