Gerald Lee Wendel died Sunday, September 13, 2009 at the age of 74 years. He was born in Cuero on December 16, 1934 to Reuben and Maud Egg Wendel.

Gerald graduated from Cuero High School in 1953 and married Joan Metting Wendel on October 17, 1954 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Yorktown, Texas.

Mr. Wendel was a farmer and in the dairy business for many years. He was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Meyersville and a Charter Member of the Meyersville Volunteer Fire Department. Jerry, as he was called by many, dearly loved Rockport, Texas and enjoyed camping there for over 30 years.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years; sons, Don and wife Heather, Randy 'Toad', and Brian and wife Laurie, all of Meyersville; daughter, Vicki and husband Wm 'Sandy' Motley from Victoria; grandchildren, Chance Sanders and Seth Wendel, Kristen and Michael Wendel, Keaton and Kally Wendel, and Michele and Scott Motley. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Ann Towery of Denton.

All of Mr. Wendel's family and grandchildren were at the family home on Sunday. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in November 2008 and after chemo treatments and numerous visits to doctors, he lost the battle.

Visitation will be Tuesday, September 15, 2009 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. Services will be held Wednesday, September 16, 2009, 11:00 a.m., at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Eric Petty officiating.

Pallbearers will be Keaton Wendel, Michael Wendel, Chance Sanders, Robert Kainer, Lee Metting, and Mike Rangnow.

Following the service, the family will receive friends at the Meyersville Country Club.
