Geraldine Beatrice Smith, 85, of Cuero passed away Saturday, May 1, 2010. She was born October 17, 1924 in Austin to the late Edgar G. and Edna (Forsvall) Hoppe. She married her late husband, Langdon M. Smith, on March 5, 1944 in Austin. She was the District Clerk for DeWitt County from 1974 until her retirement in 1992. Geraldine "Gerry" was an active member at First United Methodist Church, where she was honored with the Discipleship Award in 2007. She served on the Scholarship Foundation Board and the Finance Committee. She was one of the original members of the Ladies of Faith and Fellowship Together group and a member of the L.I.F.F.T. Missions group. She also volunteered at the C.A.M.A.L. House.
She is survived by sons, Lang Smith and wife, Therese, of Austin and Larry Smith and wife, Joan, of Athens; sister, Gloria Hjalmarson and husband, Mike, of Houston; 10 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 52 years; and her daughter, Rebecca Lynn Walsh.
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 4, 2010 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Debby Lake officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Cuero.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Craig Walsh, Cole Walsh, Dustin Smith, Charlie Smith, Doug Smith, Anderson Smith, Clayton Smith, Langdon M. 'Trey' Smith III, Kyle Kline and Kelly Kline.
The family wishes to express its sincere appreciation for the loving care provided by Estella Lira, Mary Huerta, Carmen Huerta, Julia Batista, Andrea Strait and the staff at Whispering Oaks Manor.
