CUERO - Gilbert Eugene "Gene" Mauer Sr. passed away on Feb. 27, 2009 at the age of 65. He was born on May 24, 1943 in Cuero.
Gilbert was known as Gene and grew up in the Cuero-Victoria area. He was a graduate of the Victoria High School class of 1961. He was an avid sports fan and played high school football. He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce as a young man in Victoria. His lifelong career was in home building and general contracting. His life hobbies included bowling as a young man, golf, watching football, keeping up with his old friends, and forever being a loving grandfather to all of his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Heywood W. and Floy E. Mauer, and daughter, Glenda Ladean.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy J. Mauer of Houston; stepmother, Esther Mauer; brother, Gerald R. Mauer of Port Lavaca; daughters, Bambi Lynn, Tammi Ann, Deanna Jane, Michelle Lee; and sons, Alvin Lane, Gilbert Eugene Jr., and Charles Heywood. He was a grandfather of 21 and a great-grandfather of two.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at Freund Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Freund Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will immediately follow at Hillside Cemetery.
