Henry Fassett Sheppard, 87, of Cuero passed away Monday, December 24, 2012. He was born January 21, 1925 in Cuero to the late Henry Fassett and Constance Breeden Sheppard. He attended Cuero High School graduating in 1942. Henry joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 17. At 18 he joined the Army Air Corps and was stationed on Ascenion Island on a Air Sea Rescue boat during WWII. After military service he attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas graduating in 1950 with a degree in journalism.
He married his beloved wife, Jean Ann Friar Sheppard, on January 21, 1951 in Cuero. He coached in Brady and New Braunfels before moving to Cuero to join his father-in-law in cotton buying and ranching business.
He was Postmaster in Cuero beginning in 1962 until his retirement. Following retirement he attended Coast Guard Academy receiving his Captain's License, attended and studied at Cambridge University in England. He taught Writing and Research at the University of Houston, Victoria where he received his Master's Degree.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Ann Friar Sheppard of 61 years; daughters, Laurie Ann Krueger and husband, Keith, of Cuero and Holly Jean Hickey and husband, Bill, of Cuero; son, Henry Fassett Sheppard III and wife, Rachel, of Victoria; grandchildren, John Henry Post and wife, Rachel, Elizabeth Sheppard Post, Stephen Friar Post, Mary Kate Kruger, Henry Justin Sheppard, William Fassett Hickey and wife, Cathleen, and Harris Fielding Hickey; great-grandchildren, Mayson Victoria Post, Mia Sheppard Post, and Hattie Layne Post; brothers, Frank Bates Sheppard and John Gillette Sheppard.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Willis Breeden Sheppard.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 26, 2012 from 5-7 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church. Services will be held Thursday, December 27, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church with Rev Eric Fenton officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
Pallbearers include John Henry Post, Henry Justin Sheppard, Stephen Friar Post, William Fassett Hickey, Harris Fielding Hickey, Elizabeth Sheppard Post, and Mary Kate Krueger.
Honorary Pallbearers include Don Stiles, Sr., C.P. Ernster, Jim Conrad, Jasper Quinterro, Jimmy Bulgerin, and Burt Stubbs.
