Obituary

Hilario Robledo Mejia (Larry), age 79 of Cuero, went home to Jesus on Friday, September 18, 2020.

Hilario was a man of faith and strength. He loved his family unconditionally. He was a role model to his children on how to deal with the blessings life brings and with the challenges. Hilario touched the lives of many people, too many to name here. He was known for his generosity and compassion. You could always count on him to lend a helping hand. It wasn't unusual for Hilario to give whatever he had to someone he felt needed it more. Hilario also enjoyed a good party, good food, and good music.

He was a man who loved to BBQ. He would share his experience and knowledge with anyone interested. He showed many doubters that, yes, anyone could BBQ. He was a master at it, from cooking special meals for our Troops in Port Au Prince, Haiti to catering Weddings, Birthdays, and Quinceaneras. But mostly he loved to cook for his family and friends, no special reason needed. He worked hard all his life. Even as a child, he took whatever work he could find to help support his family. One job he was especially proud of was being a part of the 1956 crew that modernized the Cuero courthouse. He took that work ethic into his adulthood. He worked as a construction contractor, served as an Auxiliary police officer for the Cuero Police Department, and as a supervisor in the Cuero Water Department, to name a few. He was also an entrepreneur starting several businesses, including Mejia's cafe, Mejia's Cement Pouring, Tex/Mex Bar B Que, and Keystone Builders. He will deeply be missed more than words can express. We were very lucky to have him in our lives.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Mejia; his sons Larry Mejia Jr (late wife Sulema), Rubin Mejia (Elizabeth), Paul Mejia (Clara); daughters, Peggy Mejia Courtney (William) and Angie Villaloboz (Marcelo); Twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and step-children, Linda Pena (Joe), Ricardo Ricky Pena (Patsy), Bernice Cardona Licon (Martin), Dora Cardona, Roberto Bobby Cardona and Julian Isaiah Recio (Mona); his sisters Eva DeHoyos (Jesse), Matilde Martinez (Ramiro), Irma Flores (Lorenzo) of San Antonio, Theresa Mejia (Maryjane) of Cuero; and brothers, Herminio Mejia (Senaida) of San Antonio and Domingo Mejia (Irma) of Cuero.

Hilario was preceded in death by his parents, Benito Mejia and Angelita Robledo Mejia; wife, Isabel Mejia; and brothers, Jose Robledo Mejia and Benito Mejia Jr.
