Jean Ann Friar Sheppard passed away September 24, 2018 after a lengthy illness. Descended from a DeWitt County Pioneer family, she was born in Cuero on January 12, 1928 the only child of Rena Mae Haile Friar and Oscar William Friar. After graduating from Cuero High School she attended the University of Mary Hardin Baylor and The University of Texas at Austin. Jean Ann graduated from the University of Houston-Victoria and studied abroad at Cambridge University with her husband, Henry. She married the love of her life, Henry Fassett Sheppard, on January 20, 1951 in Cuero . Their marriage lasted 61 years until his death in 2012. Henry and Jean Ann were lifelong DeWitt County ranchers. She was a devoted member of Grace Episcopal Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, DeWitt County Historical Museum and a member of the DeWitt County Historical Commission. Jean Ann enjoyed an active social life with her children, grandchildren, and many relatives and friends.
Jean Ann is survived by her children, Laurie Ann Sheppard Krueger and husband, Keith, Henry Fassett Sheppard and wife, Rachel, and Holly Jean Hickey and husband, Bill; her grandchildren, John Henry Post and wife, Rachel, Elizabeth Sheppard Post Berens and husband, Ricky, Stephen Friar Post and wife, Courtney, Mary Kate Krueger, Henry Justin Sheppard and wife, Susie, William Fassett Hickey and wife, Cathleen, and Harris Fielding Hickey and wife, Amber; and eight great-grandchildren, Mattie McNight Hickey, Henry Weller Sheppard, Mayson Victoria Post, Mia Sheppard Post, Hattie Layne Post, Palmer Jeanne Post, Graham Sheppard Post, and Beau Sheppard Berens .
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry and grandson, Willis Breeden Sheppard.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 26, 2018 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. Services will be held Thursday, September 27, 2018, 10:30 a.m., at Grace Episcopal Church with Pastor Jerry Sneary officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, John Henry Post, Stephen Post, Justin Sheppard, Fassett and Fielding Hickey and nephews, Michael Sheppard and Joe L. Sheppard. Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters, Elizabeth Berens and Mary Kate Krueger.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimer's Association, Hospice of South Texas, or DeWitt County Historical Museum.
