Jernell Lillie Toenjes, 91, of Cuero passed away in a San Antonio hospital on Friday July 17, 2020. She was born February 15, 1929 in Westhoff to the late Lena Koehler Pakebusch Mueller and Charlie Pakebusch. Jernell married Wardell John Toenjes on March 13, 1949 in Westhoff.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband; her brother Alvin Charles Pakebusch; sister Rube Lee Pakebusch; step-brother Henry (Hank) Mueller, brother-in-law DeWitt Toenjes.

She is survived by her daughter, Loy Tieken (Kenneth) of Cuero, and son, Chad Toenjes of Colorado; step-sister, Helen McCord of Bastrop, step-brother Wilbert (Red) Mueller of Oregon; grandchildren, Kendall (Sarah) and Ashley (Nick); great-grandchildren, Landon, Avery, Brantley, Kason, Kamdyn, and many cousins, step-nieces and nephews.

Our mother had a heart of gold and her smile would light up the room. She was always young at heart.  She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church.  She belonged to the Senior Sunbeam group for many years and loved meeting with everyone daily to play dominoes or Bingo and have lunch. She loved working word search puzzles, watching old western movies, and listening to Polka time on the radio.  You didn't have to ask her twice if she wanted to go riding, shopping or visiting a friend or family member. She was always ready to go. She loved being with her family and enjoyed the back yard barbecues. We will miss her dearly.

Due to the pandemic there will be a private graveside service with Pastor Paul Muehlbrad officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
