Obituary

John Crispen Davis, M.D., 98, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2026, at his home in Cuero. He was born January 22, 1928, in Beaumont, to the late L. Earle Davis and Merle Blackwell Davis. He was raised by his mother in Hochheim and attended school in Yoakum, graduating from Yoakum High School in 1945.

Following high school, Dr. Davis attended The University of Texas before joining the United States Army in 1946. He served as a military policeman during the Korean era and was honorably discharged in 1948. After his military service, he resumed his studies at the University of Texas, graduating in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology. He went on to earn his medical degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1954.

While attending medical school, he married Bettye Virginia Pickens on June 12, 1953, in Eastland, Texas. Their years together were filled with love, laughter, and adventure, as they built a close and loving family and a lifetime of cherished memories until her passing in 1990.

Dr. Davis began his medical career in Yoakum where he served the community for several years. He later moved to Cuero, where he became a longtime physician and partner at the High-Davis Clinic. Throughout his career, he was devoted to his patients and communities, maintained a high level of professionalism, and was equally known for the humor that brightened the lives of those around him.

In 1991, he married Emily Ferguson Calk, and they shared many years together until her passing in 2025.

Dr. Davis had a wide range of hobbies that brought him great joy throughout his life. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed working at "the farm," photography, aviation, golf, camping, arrowhead hunting, as well as hunting and fishing. He especially treasured sharing his passion for flying with others.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan Davis Smith; sons, Steven Davis and wife Mary, and Charles Davis and wife Joanie; and daughter, Nancy Davis Langhoff and husband John. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and close family friend, Allie Wadley.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Bettye Pickens Davis and Emily Ferguson Calk Davis.
