Obituary
CUERO - John Robert Ruiz, 66, passed away Monday, March 9, 2009. He was born Jan. 27, 1943, in Cuero, to Ramon Ruiz and Consuelo Tamez Ruiz.
He was a heavy equipment operator for the City of Cuero and was previously employed with Cage-Dalbert Auto Repair, L & M Salvage Yard, Traffic Signs, and Coke Bottling Company. He was also a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Cuero.
John had a passion for going "fast". As a young boy he tinkered with his bicycles, finding ways to make them go faster. When he became a teen he still had the need for speed, converting his first cars and his parents' cars into race cars. John was involved in drag racing, raced hotrods at Six Flags Drag Way in Victoria in the 60s and 70s, was one of the first Hispanic stock car racers in dirt track racing in our area, enjoyed racing in the 80s and won various races. John was a great person, father, husband, brother, friend, and a pleasure to be around.
John is survived by his wife, Anna; daughters, Tracey (Diane Robinson) of Austin, and Audrey Hill (Jason) Williams of Pflugerville; son, Travis (Gina) Hill of St. Mary's, Ga.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, Benny (Blanca) Ruiz of Victoria and Adam (Sherry) Ruiz of Victoria; and sister, Carmen Ruiz (Jimmy) Alegria of Victoria.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ramon and Consuelo Ruiz; sister, Nelda Ruiz Gonzales; and grandparents, Julian and Simons Ruiz and Fermin and Gertrude Tamez.
There will be a rosary at 7 p.m. today, March 11, 2009, at Freund Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Father Kirby Hlavaty officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Hillside Cemetery.
Pallbearers: Lee Gonzales, Joe Gonzales, Gilbert Gonzales, Juan Echavarria, Michael Ruiz, and Bryant Siegel.
Honorary pallbearers: David Gonzales, Eddie Gonzales, William Bill Ruiz, Alan Ruiz, Tony Allen, and William Wiser.
