Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Joseph Steven Garcia, who left this world on September 27th, 2024, at the age of 82. Joe was born on December 26th, 1941 in Goliad, TX to Jose and Pauline Garcia. He was the oldest of four siblings; one brother Paul Garcia, and two sisters, Diana Sanchez and Dori Garcia. Throughout his life, he touched the hearts of many with his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love for his family and friends.

Raised in Goliad, Joe graduated from Goliad High School in 1961, and he excelled in every sport.  Joe proudly served in the US Army and was stationed in Germany, where he played baseball. He and his devoted wife, Ramona, married and ventured to Santa Ana, California where they lived and started a family. While in California, Joe attended a year at Santa Ana Junior College and then began a career with Amtrak. Joe and Mona later planted new roots and settled in Lubbock, TX to raise their children. They spent years engaged in youth sports with the kids and annual family trips to south Texas creating treasured memories. He worked 35 years for the BNSF Railway where he was a Brakeman and Conductor. After retiring, Joe cherished the opportunity to spend more time with his family. He embraced this new chapter of life by enjoying family gatherings, quiet afternoons in his garden, or making the most of every moment. Joe had a strong faith and love for the Lord and always thanked Him for the many blessings in his life.

Joe had an undeniable passion for sports, a deep appreciation for history and was an avid gardener. Whether it was cheering on the Texas Tech Red Raiders, or sharing fascinating stories from Texas' rich past, he brought an infectious enthusiasm to every conversation. Affectionately known as 'El Gato Negro,' he loved connecting with people, always ready to strike up a friendly conversation. His warmth and vibrant personality made him someone people loved talking to, and his stories and insights were always shared with a smile, fun accent, and a lot of good laughs. He had a true talent for nurturing plants, and his beautifully maintained yard was a testament to his hard work, always admired by neighbors and friends alike. He enjoyed spending time on phone calls to family and friends as well as sending text messages which included links to his favorite songs, a funny picture, a cheer for his favorite sports team, and countless messages of hope and inspiration.

Joe is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ramona; his daughter, Michelle Phillips and her husband Brady, and their children Garrett, Grant, and Grayson; his son, Robert Joe Garcia and his child, Reeve; his daughter, Christel Garcia and her children Logan and Amelia; his daughter, Barbara Henson and her husband James, and their children, Tyler, Max and Mae; his son, David Medrano and his wife Trish, and their children Chris, Jessica, and Angelica; his son, Arthur Gomez and his child Emma, and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was a loving grandfather, known as Popo and Grandpa and treasured every moment spent with his grandkids. They brought him so much life and joy.

Joe's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered support during this difficult time. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.
