J.W. Bridges, 82, of Cuero passed away Thursday, March 4, 2010. He was born April 25, 1927 to the late Jessie Williams and Lizzie Brooks Bridges in Alto, Texas, where he spent most of his life until moving to Cuero in 1967.
He was a dedicated Gobbler fan and went to support the team wherever they played football and baseball. He was also a member of the Yoakum Fast-Pitch Baseball Team. He worked in the radiator service business for 60 plus years, owning and operating Bridges Radiator Service for 45 of those years. He enjoyed camping and spending time with his grandchildren. A devoted patriot, he was a United States Army veteran serving in World War II and the Korean War. He was a firm believer in hard work and instilled those qualities in his children and grandchildren. He was also a devout Christian serving as a Deacon of First Baptist Church, Cuero for 20 years. He was married for 56 glorious years.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude 'Sue' Bridges of Cuero; sons, Billy J. Bridges and wife, Diane, of Yoakum; Jesse P. Bridges and wife, Cletus, of Victoria; and Douglas E. Bridges and wife, Celene, of Cuero. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and brother, Troy Jones.
He is preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; three sisters; and his daughter, Sherri.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 7, 2010 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. Services will be held Monday, March 8, 2010, 10 a.m., at First Baptist Church with Dr. Glenn Robertson officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Hillside Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Daniel, Isaac, Jacob, Jesse, and Matthew Bridges and Sergio Gonzalez.
