Obituary

Our cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and Sister in Christ, Lucille Bitterly Clarke, age 90, of Cuero, Texas, ended her earthly journey to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 29, 2017. Lucille was born to Julia and Charles Bitterly on July 6, 1926, in Hochheim, Texas, where she was raised and went on to attended St. Joseph's High School in Yoakum. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Hunt Clarke; brother, Donald Bitterly; parents Charles and Julia Bitterly; and grandchild, Shawna Clarke. While raising her 6 children, she found the time to establish a successful business career and volunteered for many community organizations. Lucille began her career as an executive secretary for a local auditing firm, and then for the Cuero Chamber of Commerce. She eventually retired as a Commercial Insurance Service Representative for the Conrad and Tarkington agency after 25 years of service. Lucille served as a Eucharistic Minister to shut-ins, also serving in the local Prison Ministry. She was a member of the Altar Society, served as Regent in the Catholic Daughters of America, and was a choir member for St. Michael's and Our Lady of Guadalupe Parishes. She also volunteered for the Cuero Food Bank and Cuero nursing homes. Mrs. Clarke served as a precinct election judge for over 10 years. Lucille's love of sports began early, when she was a member of the original Cuero women's fastpitch softball team, the "Cuero Blue Jeans." She served as president of the Little League and was a founding member and Secretary / Treasurer of the Cuero Gobbler Booster Club for many years. Surviving Mrs. Clarke are her children Michael and wife Georgia; Patrick and wife Debi; John and wife Vicki; Marie and husband Tim; Timothy and wife Laura and Teresa and husband Mike, brothers C.B. Bitterly of Schertz and John W. Bitterly of Hochheim; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and a host of close friends who gave her life great meaning. The family would like to express thanks to those who provided in home care to Lucille throughout her extended illness, as well as those members of the Catholic community and others for their committed prayer support. Visitation will held on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at Freund Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, June 2, 2017 at St. Michael's Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. with Father David Berger officiating. A reception will follow at noon at St. Michael's Parish Hall. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery in Hochheim. Pallbearers are Shawn Clarke, Jaime Clarke, Bryon Kusior, Gil Herman, Stephen Clarke, Austin Coleman, Matt Clarke, Jake Rangnow and Charlie Clarke.
