Merton Llyod Ideus, 86, of Meyersville, passed away Sunday, November 26, 2017. He was born April 21, 1931 to the late Edmund J. and Malina Diebel Ideus. Merton married his childhood sweetheart, Marjorie Thamm, on October 29, 1950 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Meyersville. They celebrated 67 beautiful years of marriage last month at Yorktown Nursing Home. Merton was a lifelong member of St. John Evangelical Church and served on the council and various committees. Merton was a dairy farmer in Meyersville for 46 years. He was a member of Young Farmers, AMPI Board, and was treasurer of Gruenau Farmers Union. Merton was a founding member of the Meyersville Volunteer Fire Department and the American Legion. He played softball most of his adult life, coached several different teams of both young men and young women, and always had a glove and ball ready to play a game of catch. Merton was also the treasurer of the Guadalupe Fast Pitch Association. He enjoyed coon hunting and spent many nights with Charles Nagel following the sound of a dog's baying. Merton was a member of the bridge club in Meyersville, enjoyed playing dominoes and shooting pool in the game room, and loved dancing with his wife throughout their 67 years together. But probably his favorite thing to do was stand next to the piano while Marjorie played and sing the old familiar songs. Merton is survived by his wife; daughters, Sherryl "Sherry" Sanders (Fred) and Patricia "Trish" Hood all of Meyersville; son, Jonathan Ideus (Rhonda) of Meyersville; sister, Virgie Gohmert of Meyersville; grandchildren, Merti Joy Giles (Kerry), Jenny Sanders (Jasmine), Chris Ideus (Loni), Kendra Mayfield , and Danielle Egg (Adam); step-grandchild, Todd Mayfield (Stephanie); and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sons; Michael Keith Ideus and Baby Boy Ideus; son in law, Bill Mayfield; and brother in law, Ruben Gohmert. Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 28, 2017 from 5-7 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. Services will be held Wednesday, November 29 at 2 p.m. at St. John Evangelical Church in Meyersville with Pastor John Boor officiating. Interment will follow immediately at St. John Evangelical Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Merti Joy Giles, Jenny Sanders, Chris Ideus, Kendra Mayfield, Bobby Blain, Gordon Gohmert, and Chris Dearman. Honorary pallbearers will include Todd Mayfield, Jasmine James, Loni Brasher, Danielle Egg, Adam Egg, Kerry Giles and his great-grandchildren. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. John Evangelical Church or the donor's choice.
