Mildred Calhoun, a long-time resident of Alice, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at Grace Presbyterian Village in Dallas, Texas where she had lived for the past four years.
The oldest child of Walter and Minnie Williams, she was born in Piggott, Arkansas on May 27, 1917. In the late 1930's Mildred came to Alice to visit a girl friend whose family had moved to Texas. Mildred was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Alice. Beginning in the 1960's she became the proofreader for the (then) Alice Daily Echo. She held this position for over twenty years. This job was very dear to her and one she greatly enjoyed. After she retired she worked as a volunteer at the food pantry on Main St. for many years.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters, and her husband, J. C. "Jake" Calhoun. She is survived by one sister, Emma Jane Cline of Bradenton, Florida, and one brother James R. Williams of Lompoc, California and her son, Jim Calhoun and his wife Kathy of Dallas, and two grandsons Glen Calhoun of Austin and Daniel Calhoun of Plano. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews to whom she was known as Aunt "Momo".
