Obituary

Nola Koenning was born August 30, 1915 in Cheapside, Texas to Herman and Lena Maris Mutschler. Nola passed from this life into eternal rest March 1, 2018 at the age of 102. Nola married the love of her life, Alvin F. Koenning, on November 26, 1935 at St. John Lutheran Church in Westhoff. Nola and Alvin enjoyed 79 years of marriage. Nola was a devoted housewife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She also was a skilled baker, gardener and seamtress. In her younger years, one of her favorite past times was sewing a dress from a pattern cut out of a newspaper. This allowed Nola to fashion clothing after the latest designs. Nola enjoyed dancing and playing basketball as a young girl along with all the chores of living on a farm. When growing up, Nola also picked cotton and helped to care for her younger sisters. Nola was a life-long member of St. John Lutheran Church, having been baptized there December 26, 1915, and confirmed on April 13, 1930. Nola served for years on the Ladies Aide of St. John Lutheran Church and participated as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion. Nola is survived by a son, Darwin Koenning and wife, Mary; daughter, Shirlene Koenning Crawford and husband, Don, all of Victoria; grandchildren, Ty Koenning and wife, Dawn M. of Brenham, Court Koenning of Houston, Terese Tompkins and husband, Chris of El Campo, Trey Chamrad and wife, Brandi of New Braunfels; step-grand children, John Crawford (Amy) of Katy, Carly Thibodeaux (Eric) of Houston and Tara Strong (Tyson), of Dallas. Nola is also survived by eight great grandchildren, five step-great grandchildren and a step-sister, Isabelle Van Beveren of Victoria. Nola was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin F. Koenning, her parents, her sisters; Elsie Parkhurst, Gladys Strelczyk, and Adell Buckert. Visitation will be held March 10, 2018 from 5-7 PM at Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, Texas. Services, officiated by Pastor William G. Hill, will be held March 11, 2018 at 3:00 PM at St. John Lutheran Church, Westhoff, Texas. Interment will immediately follow at Westhoff Cemetery.
