Obituary

Precelia Giles Brown (Sissie) was born November 8, 1931 in Pleasant Grove Community, Yoakum, Texas to Warren and Julious E. Giles. Precelia (Sissie) accepted Christ at the age of 12 and was baptized in McClure's Tank off the Shiner, Texas Highway, near the Yoakum Highway. She married Otward Brown, Jr. on August 31, 1952 and three children were born to this union; Val, Gavilyn, and Glitheria. She graduated from Asberry High School in Yoakum, Texas. She was a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Victoria, Texas.

All of her adult life, she was actively involved in church. It was no doubt that she knew the Lord and sought to know him daily. She was an Announcing Clerk, Program Chairperson and Sunday School Teacher. She loved all of the students in her class and treated them as her own. She always believed in living life with a "purpose" and instilled in children that same principle. She shared her love with all mankind; she loved her family, friends, and neighbors and even had a little love left for her adorable pets. Precelia had a flair for style and was always dressed to the nines.

Whenever called upon, she was always ready and willing to give her service. For over 37 years, she served as secretary for Dewitt County Sunday School as well as BTU Congress. She always said that her first job was in the cotton patch, and doing domestic work in private homes. She worked in Cuero at the High School Snack Bar as manager and later became a paraprofessional in John C. French Elementary School. After 24 years of service, she retired from CISD.

She was a charter member and secretary of the Beautify Cuero committee. Her favorite hobbies were working in the flower garden and decorating her home for every occasion, especially Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Several times she won first place and received numerous awards for her creative talents. In addition to gardening at home, she worked in the Garden at the Cuero Museum where she made confetti eggs that were sold at Easter. As a member of Heirloom Stitches Guild of Cuero, she made quilts for the needy and for herself. One of the quilts she made was donated to the Educational Committee that sold at an auction for $1,000. She was a Charter member of Cuero Educational Committee that helped the children of Cuero schools. At the Camel House, she volunteered and gave food out to the needy. She resigned from the Lawyer's Grievance Committee after serving for three years.

Cooking was one of her favorite passions and at the end of each school year she would make breakfast for as many as 60 school staff members. No job was too hard or too much for her. She stayed busy and lived her life to the fullest. Precelia never met a stranger, when she made a friend-it was for life and she kept in touch throughout life.

She was the first black female to run and win the Cuero City Council in Dewitt County as well as one of the first Blacks to work Election Polls in Dewitt County which lasted 47 years. She told the Cuero Educational Foundation Committee when she retired from volunteering that "she didn't want to stay at the Fair too long".

Precious Memories will forever be held in the hearts of all who loved her: Otward (husband); Children: Valerie Gerard Brown, Gavilyn Varcelli Jones, Glitheria Vernaye Cruz, (Doyle Cruz, son-in-law); Grandchildren: Gavarae Vashada Dokun (Tunde), Gaylon Morgan Jones III; Great-grandchildren, Devion, Avery, Maiya, Imani, Grayson, Sanaa; brother, Pressley Giles; pets, Percy, Daisy, Rosie and Buns; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins, extended family and great friends of all races. She was the baby out of ten children. She was preceded in death by her mother; father; 8 sisters and brothers, Leona, Lillian, Sammie, Cary, Londee, Gravely, Eulaliah, and Lellious (Poncho).
