IN LOVING MEMORY OF
R.O.
Wickham
February 1, 1931 – August 2, 2018
R O Wickham (Ro) passed away peacefully with family at his side on August 2, 2018. Ro was born on February 1, 1931 in Lakeville, Indiana, to Ray Orion Wickham and Coral Miles Wickham. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Sibyl Glee Wickham, sister Josephine A. Wickham, brother Rodney S. Wickham, brother Carmi M. Wickham, sister Jacquiline R. Wickham, and daughter Andrea Rene Wickham. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Thomas Wickham of Cuero, Texas; son, R. Drake Wickham of Cuero, Texas; daughter Krisondra Wickham Fowler and husband Jim of Corpus Christi, Texas; son Matthew Kyle Wickham of Austin, Texas; five grandchildren (Adrienne, Sara, Will, Kate, Anna Grace); and four great grandchildren (James Patrick, Bryn, Emma, and Maya). Ro was an avid car lover when he was young and his family often heard stories of his escapades building and racing cars when he worked at the Studebaker plant in South Bend, Indiana. Ro was a renowned architect and was a partner with several firms until starting Island Architects on Padre Island, Corpus Christi, Texas in 1984. He designed hundreds of homes on the coast and all across Texas. Ro was the "Island Architect" and he always "took advantage of the view." He and Barbara started a family in Indiana. They had many fond memories of the adventures on Newport Drive. He hauled them all to Texas in 1970, where they lived in Corpus Christi, then Cypress, and then Corpus Christi again. He and his family spent many fabulous years in the house Ro designed on Eaglesnest Bay Drive on Padre Island. They loved visiting, birdwatching, sailing, relaxing, and making toasts to the beautiful sunsets from the deck. He was an excellent sailor and sailing with Ro could often be adventurous. His son Matt is quite lucky to have survived a broken mast while sailing with his Dad on the Laguna Madre a few years ago. On the other hand, one of his proudest moments was winning a Padre Island Yacht Club regatta. Ro, Barbara, Drake and Andi moved to Cuero in 2007 where he lived his last years relaxing in the home he designed on a beautiful bluff in the country. Ro never sat still until his last few years and it really frustrated him that he couldn't do the things he did when he was younger. When Ro bought a house, you could bet the farm that there would be a new gazebo, two new decks, a new patio, and a couple of new rooms within a year. All to be rebuilt or replaced by other new structures in a year or two. He loved animals and always had dogs and cats around. When living in Cypress, Texas in the 1970's, Ro took in orphaned animals with his daughter Andi, and at one point the property housed 20 various birds, a few deer, a bunch of raccoons (including "Rocky"), a vulture ("Igor"), a few ferrets, etc. He was well known for his beautiful, hand drawn Christmas cards (Roboat Repros), many with a coastal theme but always creative and with meticulous detail. He was a fine man and was deservedly blessed with many, many good friends over the course of his life. Most importantly, he cherished his time with each and every one of his family members. He was loved in so many ways and will be greatly missed. The family would like to express deep appreciation to Hospice of South Texas who provided invaluable emotional support and medical care in Ro's last few days. A celebration of his life with his family and close friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in his honor to the Amos Rehabilitation Keep (ARK) at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas (https://utmsi.utexas.edu/about/facilities/ark/donate-ark.com), or to a charity of your choice.
