Raul "Roy" Villa, 86, of Cuero, passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2010. He was born September 7, 1924, in Cuero, Texas, to the late Amado Villa and Elijea Arredonda Villa. He was the youngest of 13 children. On October 2, 1941, he married the former Felipa "Phyllis" Trevino of Cuero, Texas.
He enlisted in the United States Army on April 2, 1943, and upon completion of basic training, was deployed with the 172nd Infantry Regiment 43rd Division to the Pacific Theater. During his deployment he saw action in the Southern Philippines, New Guinea, Northern Solomons, and Luzon. His awards include: Sharpshooter Badge with Rifle Bar, World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 4 bronze service stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and The Purple Heart for wounds sustained in battle at Luzon on January 18, 1945. After recovering from his wounds at Brooke Convalescent Hospital, San Antonio, Texas, he was honorably discharged and returned to Cuero on December 28, 1945.
He and Phyllis moved to Racine, Wisconsin, in 1946, where he worked for Case Company. They moved back to Cuero in 1948 where he started work at Cuero Lutheran Hospital and Bohman Clinic. They then moved to Victoria in 1953 where he went to work for Brown & Root Construction. In 1958, he went to work for the Victoria Independent School District in the maintenance department. He was employed with VISD until 1981 when he decided to come back to Cuero. He then worked in maintenance for the Cuero Independent School District until his retirement in 1988.
He is survived by his wife; daughter: Mary Louise Hopkin (Lloyd) of Cuero; son: Donald Ray Villa of Cuero; 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Elvera Cisneros, Flora Villa, Rosa Aldaco, Fermina Villa, and Leonor Villa; brothers: Frank Villa, Amado "Bill" Villa, Alonso Villa, Felix Villa, Gregorio Villa, Isabel Villa, and Elijo Villa.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 7, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Friday, October 8, 2010, 2:00 p.m., at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Father Kirby Hlavaty. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
