Samuel D. Pickens, 59, of Cuero, passed away Friday, Dec. 11, 2009. He was born July 31, 1950, in Cuero, the first child born to Mazie M. Haskin and the late Donrell Pickens. He attended and graduated from Cuero High School.
Samuel received Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. He was no stranger to anyone. He was united and baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Pickens, of 34 years; mother, Mazie Haskin; two daughters, Archeyne Hill and Charlene Jones; four grandchildren, Sharice, Duane Jr., DeJa, and Alana; two sons-in-law, Duane Hill and George Jones; sister, Joycelyn M. Pickens; four other sisters and three brothers; uncles, nieces, and a host of friends.
Visitation will be 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today, Dec. 17, 2009, at Freund Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at First Baptist Church in Cuero, the Rev. A.L. Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Roy Pickens, Donald Pickens, Larry Pickens, Claude Brown, Sydney Battles, and Sylvester Ellis.
Honorary pallbearers are Larry Carter and Michael Pickens.
