Thaddeus Monroe Battles Sr., 90, of Cuero passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2015 in Round Rock. He was born December 4, 1924 in DeWitt County to the late James Monroe and Emma Enoch Battles. Thaddeus married Eliza Marie Williams on August 19, 1950 in Cuero. He was employed at Southwestern Bell for 33 1/2 years until retirement. Thaddeus was active in his community serving on the Cuero ISD School Board, Keep Cuero Beautiful Committee, as well as many others. He also served as a bartender in the DeWitt County area for over 50 years.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years; children, Thaddeus M. Battles Jr. (Billie) of Round Rock, Emma D. Walker (Garret) of Cypress, Sidney W. Battles (Deborah) of Cuero, Helen E. Ross of Round Rock, Ricky A. Battles of Cuero, and Carolyn J. Battles of Universal City; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Elmo Battles and Lucy Mae Wright.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Francis E. Wesley; and sister, Vivian Friar.
Visitation will be held Sunday, January 11, 2015 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. Services will be held Monday, January 12, 2015, 11 a.m., at First Baptist Church, Cuero, with Rev. Gary D. Brown, Rev. Rickey L. Campbell, and Rev. George Franklin officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasantville Cemetery. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
