Verlin Joseph Trautwein passed away at his home on July 5, 2016. He was born on December 24, 1929 in Cuero to the late William Rochester Trautwein and Annie Bertha Wolf Trautwein. He attended school mostly in Cuero and was an all-around athlete that played football, baseball, basketball and track. He joined the Marine Corps in September 1948 and served until January 1950. He met his wife, Colleen Luker in high school in 1946. They were married June 25, 1949 and a second time on November 22, 1951. He is survived by his wife, Colleen Trautwein; younger brother Robert "Putsy" Trautwein; son Barton Trautwein; daughters, Velinda Stevens and Reba Goodman; 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; older brother Bill Trautwein; and daughter Jana Trautwein.
He worked in many areas of the natural gas compression industry. In 1953, he started work for Cooper-Bessemer and stayed for 20 years. In 1965, he was sent overseas to establish a new facility in Kuwait. During the seventies, while living in Houston, he bought a domino hall in Cuero so he could have a place to play when he came home on the weekends. He named the dominos hall Small Talk. Verlin continued to play a weekly game of dominos for the rest of his life. He worked for several other companies before starting his own company in 1980, Rental Compression, Inc., with other shareholders, who were also his customers. Colleen worked with Verlin to make the company successful. The company sold after 14 years in 1994. He retired a short time later but came out of retirement in 1997 to start a new company, Prime Compression Services, LLC, with his wife Colleen and son Barton, which they sold in 2000. Retirement lasted this time, as Verlin and Colleen traveled to wherever their children moved, enjoying many places in the USA and Canada. They also took trips to Las Vegas, California and Louisiana for fun. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at the family farm, which has been in the family since 1865 and was recognized by the State of Texas with Family Land Heritage Certificate of Honors.
The family will receive guests starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Freund Funeral Home in Cuero, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. with Cuero Church of Christ Evangelist Richard Smith officiating. A family burial will be held at Hillside Cemetery.
