Obituary

Wayne L. Hartman, 91, of San Antonio passed away Sunday, February 23, 2010. He was born July 4, 1918 in Cuero, Texas.

Judge Hartman graduated Cuero High School, attended Texas A&M University and the University of Texas Law School, and was admitted to the Bar in 1940. He practiced law with Newton Crain in Cuero and was elected County Attorney of DeWitt County where he served until volunteering for service in the U.S. Army. Judge Hartman returned to office as County Attorney and was then appointed District Attorney of the 24th Judicial District. In 1955 he moved his family to Victoria and was appointed Judge of Victoria County. During his tenure, Judge Hartman presided over the expansion of the Victoria County Hospital and was instrumental in saving and greatly expanding the old Victoria County Courthouse. Many roads and highways were improved during his time. In 1970, he left office to join Arthur Lapham in private practice. Upon retirement, he returned to Cuero where he carried on the family tradition of farming and cattle ranching.

Judge Hartman is preceded in death by his parents August Christian and Elsie Lenz Hartman; as well as by his sister Hazel Hartman.

Judge Wayne Hartman is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Emalee Wells Hartman and by daughters Letty Lew Lloyd and her husband Dr. David G. Lloyd, of San Antonio; Susan Wells Pope and her husband Michael L. Pope of Lake Jackson. His four doting grandsons and their wives are David G. Lloyd Jr. and Paola; Christian Hartman Lloyd; Wayne Lloyd Pope and Jamie; Lewis Wells Pope and Amy. Judge Hartman is also survived by great grand children Christopher, Sofia, Ryan, Jack, Lynley, Mason, and Lane. He was lovingly attended by caregivers Margie Ford, Rosie Taylor, Yolanda Rico, Mae McIntyre, Loetta White, and SharonJones.

Services will be held Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at 12 noon at Grace Episcopal Church in Cuero, Texas with a burial to follow at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero, Texas.

Pallbearers include David George Lloyd Jr., Christian Hartman Lloyd, Wayne Lloyd Pope, Lewis Wells Pope, Fain McDougal Jr., Shannon Ratliff III, Larry McWherter, and Richard McAlister.

Honorary Pallbearers include Frank B. Sheppard, Shannon Ratliff II, Richard Gieger, William 'Billy' Cusack, Bill Blackwell, Bucky Sager, Dr. James Pridgen, Frank Buhler.

Wayne L. Hartman will be remembered by all who knew him for his loyalty, integrity, and ready, sharp wit.
