Wilfred Henry Block, 83, of Cuero, passed away Tuesday, February 3, 2015. He was born December 22, 1931 in Garfield to the late Rudolph Martin and Erna Louise Flessner Block. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1950 and served four years on the USS Salisbury Sound. He played football for the Navy and the Army during his service. He received his honorable discharge in 1954. Wilfred received recognition and awards during his service of China Service, Navy Occupation, National Defense, Good Conduct, Korean Service, and United Nations. He came back to Texas and went to college at SWTSU where he received his Master's Degree in Education and met his beloved wife. Wilfred married Frankie Sue Pfardrescher on August 11, 1956 in Baytown. He coached at McAllen, Tuluso Midway, and came to Cuero in 1969. He coached Cuero Gobbler Football until 1973 and remained active in Booster Club through the years. Wilfred became principal of Hunt Elementary in 1973. He also worked in administration and transportation at CISD before retiring after 42 years of service. Wilfred was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, the Cuero VFW, and Cuero American Legion.
He is survived by his daughter, Jackolyn "Jackie" Streety and husband, Philip, of Smiley; grandchildren, Karly Streety of Smiley and Grady Block of Kansas; and daughter-in-law, Missy Duval of Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife, Frankie Block; son, Martin Block; and brother, Harold Block.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 5, 2015 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. Services will be Friday, February 6, 2015, 10 a.m., at St. Mark's Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Thompson. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Cuero.
Pallbearers include B.J. Drehr, Randy Katzmark, Jimmy Bundick, Cliff Weber, Ray Reese, Richard Weber, and Dr. Dan Dugi. Honorary pallbearers include Buster Gilbreath, Ray Kelly, Stayton Weldon, Lanny Havemann, Ben Colwell, and Victor Mathis.
