William Wayne Russell, 84, of Cuero passed away Monday, April 1, 2019. He was born December 20, 1934 in Boerne to the late William Paul and Elsie Marie Ferguson Russell. Wayne was a United States Marine Corps veteran. He married the love of his life, Patsy Marie Morrow, on November 29, 1969 in Austin. He was the Printing Supervisor for Texas Parks and Wildlife in Austin for 20 years before going to work for Hyde Park Baptist for 13 years. Wayne was active in many organizations to include the AMA, SCCA, IKF, WKA, IMSA, PADI (Scuba diving), Cessna 150 Club, Hill Country Kart Club, and Boy Scouts. He was also a member of Austin Street Baptist Church in Yoakum. Wayne cherished the time he served on mission trips to East/West Africa, Brazil, and Kenya and loved cave scuba diving. His passion for more than 60 years was racing "anything that had wheels" - motorcycles, stock cars, open wheel formula cars, and karts. He also enjoyed flying and working on the Cessna 150.
Wayne is survived by his sisters-in-law, Rosemary Morrow of Austin and Kathy Morrow of Cuero; brothers-in-law, William Morrow of Cuero and Larry Balch of Arnold MD; nephews, Mark Ocean, David Ocean, and Stephen Ocean, all of Austin; nieces, Christine Ocean and her husband, Saraha Turner and her husband, Justin, and Hannah Smith and her husband, Colton, all of Austin; and close friends, Vicky Schley Cliffe and her husband, Joe, of Yoakum; Stephen Smith and his family of New Braunfels, Doug Scales and his family of Cedar Creek; and Susie and Danny Gregory of Harrison, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Patsy Russell; brother, James Russell; father-in-law, William T. Morrow; mother-in-law, Gladys Morrow; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Balch and Terlene Ocean; niece, Emily Morrow; and nephew, Derek Balch.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 4, 2019 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. A lunch for family and friends will begin at 12 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2019 at Austin Street Baptist Church with funeral services to follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor Hollis Hoffman officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Steven Smith, Christian Smith, Jon Knowlton, Gary Baker, Bob Harbers, Don Nobles, Garlan Weber, and Carl O'Neill. Honorary pallbearers include John Hamilton, Chester Wallace, and Robbie Caraway.
Memorial contributions may be made to Austin Street Baptist Church Youth Fund.
