Obituary

Winston G. Sexton, 77, passed away July 9, 2010, after suffering a stroke. He was a husband, father, brother, uncle, geologist and philanthropist. He was an extraordinary man who lived life on a very large scale. He was born in Houston, Texas October 5, 1932 to Hallie Berry Sexton and Joseph Lee Sexton, the last of five children.

He is predeceased by his parents, sister Lerah H. Sexton, and brother Don Vernon Sexton of Houston.

Win grew up in the depths of the Great Depression and and dreamt of becoming an independent oilman. He graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in Geological Engineering. His first job with Gulf Oil in Ft. Worth, then Midland, was interrupted by a call from Uncle Sam. As an Air Force Civil Engineer, he designed runway upgrades at Carswell AFB necessary for the operation of B-52s. After two years he returned to Midland and "The Gulf." He progressed to Southern Minerals in first Midland, then Corpus Christi. He worked for Bridwell Oil in Alice until the owner died. A retainer with Bell and Dansfiell led to a partnership with Kelly Bell, and finally to his first independent company, Sexton Oil & Minerals. As an explorationist he found oil and gas along the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana. Whether in boom or bust, whether in the simple life he came from, or in the rewards he achieved, lost, and regained, he was consistently gracious and generous. He was the founder of a dozen other companies in investments, ranching, and entrepreneurship. He was gentlemanly, private and sociable; simultaneously vain and modest. He was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the Society of Independent Petroleum Engineers, the Coastal Bend Geological Society, and South Texas Botanical Gardens. He was a long time substantial contributor to First Christian Church, the Republican Party and the Art Museum of South Texas. He was a fiercely loyal Aggie. At Texas A&M University he served on the Earth Resources Advisory Council at the invitation of his mentor, Michael T. Halbouty. He loved to globetrot with the Travelling Aggies. He established an endowed scholarship for upperclassmen geoscience students in the Corps of Cadets, and was a member of the Sul Ross Group. He is remembered fondly by Boy Scouts whom he served as Assistant Scout Master, especially for times they camped out at the Sexton Ranch. Win hosted many groups there. First Christian Church members were astonished at their Annual Picnic to see cowboys "working the cattle" in the corral. His service in First Christian Church included Sunday School teacher of high school students, sponsor of CYF, Deacon, and outspoken member of various committees over the years. For many people, planting a garden is a way of planning for a future harvest months ahead, but for Win gardening was where he found instant gratification. His unique talent enabled him to plan decades-long projects in order to harness geological forces acting over millions of years.

He leaves behind, in Corpus Christi, his loving wife, Kay Elder Sexton and son Bryan C. Sexton; of Austin, son Winston Murray Sexton and sister Virgie Sexton Locke; of Houston, sister Joan Sexton Lasiter.
